When you stay at one, it is easy to be transported back in time. The Pousadas were originally owned by the state but are now partially privatised. They are divided in to four different types including historical Pousadas, nature Pousadas, Charm Pousadas and historic design Pousadas. They vary in size, having between 9 and 49 rooms. In 2005 the first Pousada outside of Portugal was built at Salvador de Bahia in Brazil.
