As it's June, it will be the middle of winter in the Southern Hemisphere, but the climate and weather will be quite different to ours.
The players in Durban will enjoy a dry, sub-tropical climate, with June temperatures averaging 23 degrees and just over an inch of rainfall. Good on the football pitches!
Johannesburg, South Africa's largest city, also has a subtropical climate and in winter it's at its sunniest, so it's perfect for catching a few rays between the matches.
Cape Town, although it's in the same country, has an entirely different climate altogether. There is it more Mediterranean, with June highs reaching 18 degrees. It is also one of the wettest months there.
| | | South Africa's Other Attractions | | Safari Parks Krüger National Park is world famous as one of the best safari parks, home to Africa's legendary wildlife. This destination offers both self-drive and guided safaris, which let you have a hands-on adventure. You can stay within the camp too, in one of the accommodation sites.
Addo National Elephant Park lies in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. The parks is home to the 'big seven': elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo, leopard, southern right whale and great white shark.
Wine Regions Grapes are grown all over South Africa, but there are a couple of places which produce the best. Constantia was the birthplace of the South African vineyards, and the breezy climate is perfect. Robertson is a renowned part of the Cape, and a particular producer of chardonnays, even though it is hot there. Stellenbosch is the country's main producer of wine. The mix of the earth makes for the ideal grounds to grow spectacular red wines. The mountains which fringe the vineyards of South Africa not only help the growing, but provide a lovely view when looking out on the landscape.
| | | Why South Africa was chosen | | South Africa is the first African nation to host the World Cup. It beat 4 others in the vote: Egypt; Libya and Tunisia; and Morocco. All in all there will be 10 stadiums, 5 new and 5 renovated. Not only new stadiums, but a new infrastructure will be developed, benefitting the games and also the country afterwards.
The games will be played around the country in Pretoria, in the Loftus Versfeld stadium, Port Elizabeth , in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and Durban to name a few, and then the final played on the 11th July in Johannesburg in Soccer City. Celebrate the final in Johannesburg's deepest pub, a full 225 metres below sea level! | | | Have a look around HolidayCheck
